1. Classification Based on Carbon Content

(a) Low Carbon Steel (Mild Steel)

  • Carbon Content: 0.05% to 0.25%

  • Characteristics: High ductility, good weldability, and relatively soft.

  • Applications: Automotive bodies, structural beams, and sheet metal products.

(b) Medium Carbon Steel

  • Carbon Content: 0.25% to 0.60%

  • Characteristics: Balanced strength and ductility, can be heat-treated for improved hardness.

  • Applications: Machinery parts, gears, and railway tracks.

(c) High Carbon Steel

  • Carbon Content: 0.60% to 1.25%

  • Characteristics: Very hard and strong but less ductile and more brittle.

  • Applications: Cutting tools, springs, and high-strength wires.

2. Classification Based on Manufacturing Process

Carbon steel plates can also be classified by their production methods:

(a) Hot-Rolled Steel Plates

  • Produced by rolling steel at high temperatures.

  • Less precise dimensions but cost-effective.

  • Used in construction and heavy machinery.

(b) Cold-Rolled Steel Plates

  • Processed at room temperature for smoother surfaces and tighter tolerances.

  • Higher strength and better surface finish.

  • Used in automotive panels and appliances.

(c) Forged Steel Plates

  • Shaped under high pressure for superior strength.

  • Used in high-stress applications like aerospace and defense.

3. Classification Based on Application

Different industries require specific types of carbon steel plates:

  • Structural Steel Plates – Used in buildings and bridges.

  • Pressure Vessel Plates – Designed to withstand high-pressure environments.

  • Shipbuilding Plates – Corrosion-resistant and high-tensile strength for marine use.

  • Boiler Plates – Heat-resistant for boilers and thermal equipment.
